Cut onions in half and thinly slice. Set aside.
In a medium skillet, heat butter and olive oil. Add cut onions and sauté over medium heat until soft (approx. 10 minutes). Add spices to onions and continue to cook over medium low heat until onions begin to caramelize (approx. 20 minutes). Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Using a knife or food processor finally chop onions (careful not to puree).
In a medium bowl beat cream cheese until smooth (scraping down during mixing). Add sour cream and mayo. Continue to mix until smooth. Fold in prepared onions and mix until combined. Add additional salt and pepper if desired.
For best flavour let rest for 1 hour in the refrigerator. Serve with veggies, chips or crostini’s using Kinnikinnick Soft Hot Dog Buns.
Tips & Variations
- Chopping onions smaller after cooking limits the chance of burnt pieces or extra crispy pieces during sautéing.
